Port
Orford (Siskiyou) Cedar
Also called
"Ginger Cedar" for its highly unusual spicy
odor, Port Orford Cedar is found only in the
tangled remote coastal mountains of northern
California and southern Oregon. Its soothing
odor is extremely evocative and was said to have
strongly affected 19th century seamen who sailed
schooners made from the fresh wood - "the odor
grew and grew on them until they were almost mad
with it" (Donald Peattie). I hope it doesn't
drive you mad! This is the real smell of Port
Orford Cedar and the gorgeous, rugged country in
which it grows. |
Christmas Fir

Throughout the mountain ranges of
the West, cold-hardy trees such as Grand, Noble
and White Fir dominate the higher alpine
country, where the extremes in temperature and
weather discourage all but the most determined
of plants. If this evergreeny, balsamic scent
seems familiar, it’s probably because these same
Firs have long been popular as Christmas trees.
So whether you enjoy this sachet because it
smells like the holidays or because it reminds
you of hiking in the Cascades, savor this gift
from the wild! |

TIP: Don't use
Antibacterial Soaps. Antibacterial is an additive in
many soaps and household cleaners. Approximately
seventy five percent of all liquid soaps contain
antibacterial ingredients. According to a study from
the Columbia University School of Nursing in New
York, antibacterial products do little to prevent
illness. Using them in your home is overkill and can
create resistant super-bugs. It is much better to
just wash your hands thoroughly with a good natural
soap and warm water.

Because this is a natural incense with no potasium
nitrate (a chemical burning aid found in virtually
every incense) it may go out from time to time. If
this happens, just relight, let flame burn for 10
seconds or so, blow out flame. |
